Here is the zodiac in Egypt’s Dendera Temple, more than 2000 years old with Sagittarius circled in red.

The National Geographic zodiac poster shows Sagittarius as seen in the Southern Hemisphere.  Even connecting the Sagittarius stars with lines, it is hard to ‘see’ a rider, horse or centaur in this constellation.

As with the previous constellations, the image of the archer is not innate within the star constellation itself.  Rather, the idea of the mounted archer came first, from something other than the stars. The Original Zodiac Story

The original zodiac was not a horoscope to guide your daily decisions towards good luck, health, love and fortune based on your birth date and the movement of the planets.  It was a plan promised by God to guide us on His Way. The 12 zodiac constellations recorded this plan as a visual reminder for people.  Astrology originally was the study and knowledge of this story in the stars.

This Story began with the Seed of the Virgin in Virgo.  It continued with Libra, reminding us that our balance of deeds are too light.  Scorpio showed the tremendous struggle between the Seed of Virgo and the Scorpion.  Theirs is a battle for the right to rule.

Sagittarius in the Zodiac Story

Sagittarius foretells how this struggle will end.  We understand when we see Sagittarius with the surrounding constellations. It is this astrology context that reveals the meaning of Sagittarius.

Sagittarius in the Zodiac – Complete defeat of Scorpio

The drawn arrow of Sagittarius points directly at the heart of Scorpio.  So it clearly shows the mounted archer destroying his mortal enemy. This was the meaning of Sagittarius in the ancient Zodiac. The Dendera Zodiac (above) and all zodiacs with the constellations placed side-by-side with each other also show the victory of the mounted archer over Scorpio.

The Sagittarius chapter in the written Story

The final victory of Jesus Christ, the Seed of the Virgin, over his enemy is prophesied in the Bible to occur as pictured in Sagittarius.  Here is the written prophecy of the Christ’s return to earth.

11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small.”

19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army.

The Serpent’s Doom

And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.

When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The First Astrological Unit

These first four signs of the Ancient Zodiac: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius form an astrological unit within the 12 chapter Zodiac Story which focus on the coming ruler and his opponent.  Virgo foretold his coming from the Seed of the Virgin. Libra foretold that a price would be required for our insufficient deeds. Scorpio foretold that price would be death. But Sagittarius foretold his ultimate victory with the arrow of the archer pointing directly at the heart of the Scorpion.

These Signs were for all people, not just for those born in each constellation’s month. Sagittarius is for you even if you are not born between November 23 and December 21. It was given so we could know the ultimate triumph over the enemy and choose our allegiance accordingly. Jesus Christ fulfilled Virgo, Libra and Scorpio in his first coming. The fulfilling of Sagittarius awaits his second coming. But since the first three signs of this unit have been fulfilled, it provides a basis to trust that the Sagittarius Sign will also be fulfilled.

Jesus and Your Sagittarius Horoscope

Horoscope comes from the Greek ‘Horo’ (hour) and the Bible marks these hours for us, including the Sagittarius ‘hour’. The Sagittarius horo hour is

“But about that day or hour (horo) no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour (horo) when you do not expect him.

Jesus tells us that no one knows that precise hour (horo) of the Christ’s return and the complete defeat of his enemy, except God.  However, there are clues indicating the nearness of that hour.  It says we are likely not to be expecting it or be ready for it.

Sagittarius tells that us that you will face many distractions before the hour of the return of the Christ and the complete defeat of Satan.  In fact, if you are not daily transformed by the renewing of your mind then you will be conformed to the standards of this world –and that hour will hit you unexpectedly and you will not be compatible with Him when He is revealed.  If you do not want to reap all the terrible consequences of missing that hour you need to make a conscious decision daily to be prepared.  Take stock of whether you are mindlessly following the gossip and intrigues of the celebrities and soap operas.  If so that will most likely result in traits such as slavery of your mind, loss of close relationships now, and certainly miss the hour of his return along with most others. 

Your personality has both its strengths and weaknesses, but the enemy, who wants you to remain distracted, attacks you at your weak characteristics.  Be it idle gossip, pornography, greed, or just wasting your time on social media, He knows the temptations that you will fall for.  So pray for help and guidance so that you can walk the straight and narrow path and be ready for that hour.  Seek out the few others who also do not want to miss that hour and together you can help each other daily so it does not come upon you unexpectedly.

Capricorn in the Ancient Zodiac

In the ancient Zodiac, Capricorn was the fifth of twelve astrology constellations that formed a Great Story. We saw that the first four constellations were an astrological unit concerning the person of a Great Redeemer and his mortal conflict with His Enemy.

Capricorn begins the second unit which focuses on the work of this Redeemer as it affects us. In this unit we see the results – the blessings to us – of the Redeemer’s victory over His enemy.  This unit opens with a Goat and closes with a Ram (Aries) and the middle two Signs concern fishes (Aquarius & Pisces).  How fitting then that Capricorn has always been the front of a Goat joined to the tail of a Fish.

In the ancient Zodiac, Capricorn was for all people since it foretold benefits available to anyone.  So even if you are not a Capricorn in the modern horoscope sense, the ancient astrology story embedded in the stars of Capricorn is worth understanding.

Capricorn Constellation in Astrology

Capricorn is a star constellation that form the image of a Goat fused with a fish tail.  Here are the stars forming Capricorn connected by lines.  Can you see anything resembling a goat-fish in this image?  I cannot. How could anyone even imagine a fused goat-and-fish creature from these stars?

Goats and fishes are not even remotely related in nature.  But this sign goes back as far as we know in human history.  Here is the zodiac in the Dendera Temple of Egypt, more than 2000 years old, with the image of the Goat-Fish Capricorn circled in red.

As with the previous zodiac constellations, the Capricorn image of the Goat-fish is not obvious from the constellation itself.  It is not innate within the star constellation.  Rather, the idea of a fused Goat-Fish came first, from something other than the stars. The first astrologers then overlaid this idea onto the stars to be a recurring sign.  But why?  What did it mean to the ancients?

The image of Capricorn shows the Goat bowing its head, with its right leg folded underneath the body, and he seems unable to rise with the left.  It looks like the goat is dieing.  But the tail of the Fish is supple, bent and is full of vigour and life.

From the beginning of human history the goat (and sheep) was the accepted way to offer a sacrifice to God. The Bible tells us that Abel, son of Adam & Eve, offered sacrifices from his flocks. God accepted his sacrifices but not Cain’s. Abraham offered a Ram (male goat or sheep) and God ransomed him with it.  God instructed Moses to tell the Israelites to offer a lamb for Passover. These were all signs to teach us that a ransom of another life would be needed to redeem us from the balance of Libra. Jesus, in his sacrifice on the cross volunteered to be that sacrifice for us.

The Capricorn goat bowed in death was the sign for the ancients to remind them of the promise of the coming redeemer who would be that sacrifice. Jesus was the fulfillment of that Sign.

The Capricorn Fish

But what is the meaning of the Capricorn Fish tail? To illustrate we look at another ancient culture – the Chinese. The Chinese New Year celebration occurs January/February (around the time of Capricorn) and is a tradition that goes back thousands of years. This festival celebrates with decorations that Chinese hang on their doors. Here are some images of this.

You will notice that all show fishes. Fishes are used in their New Year Greeting because, from ancient times, fishes were symbols of life, abundance and plenty.

In the same way, in the ancient zodiac, fishes represented the abundance of living people – multitudes – for whom the sacrifice was made.

Jesus used the same image of fishes when he taught about the many whom his sacrifice would reach. He taught

Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.

Matthew 13: 47-48

When Jesus explained the future work of his disciples he said

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

Matthew 4:18-19

Both times the image of fishes represented the multitudes of people who would receive the gift of the Kingdom of Heaven. Why not you too?

The Capricorn Horoscope in the Writings

Horoscope comes from the Greek ‘Horo’ (hour) and thus means the marking of special hours. The Prophetic writings mark the Capricorn ‘horo’ in vivid ways. Because Capricorn is two-fold (Goat and fish), the Capricorn horo reading is also two-fold: the hour of sacrifice and the hour of multitudes.  Jesus marked the first of the hours like this.

14 When the hour (horo) came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” …

Luke 22:14-16

In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

This is the ‘hour’ of the Capricorn goat.  This hour had been marked by the Passover exodus over 1500 years previously, when the blood of the sacrifice was painted on the doors so that death would pass over.  That very hour Jesus revealed the full meaning of Passover by stating that his blood would similarly be poured out for them … and us.  He would die so we would get life, just like the Passover with Moses … just like the Capricorn goat.  That hour leads to the next hour – multitudes with life.

I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the hour (horo) to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

Revelation 14: 14-16

The prophetic writing says that this hour will come when those joined to the Capricorn sacrifice will participate in the harvest to heaven at the end of this age.  This is the hour in the parable of Jesus when the fish are brought in the net. These two hours of Goat and fish balance and fulfill each other.  These two hours marked Capricorn in the ancient astrological horoscope.

Your Capricorn Horoscope Reading

You and I can apply the Capricorn horoscope reading today with the following.

Capricorn tells that there is more to life than meets the eye.  If you or I were running the universe perhaps all its characteristics would be straightforward and obvious.  But you need to accept the fact that neither you nor I are in charge.  Just as there are physical laws that govern the motion of planets, there are spiritual laws that govern you.  Better accept that reality than continue to fight or try to get around it.  Otherwise you will find that going against these laws is just as painful as going against physical laws. Certainly you do not want to be incompatible with the fundamental spiritual horos.

Perhaps a good place to start getting in sync with these spiritual laws is to just express thanks and gratitude instead of first trying to understand it all.  After all, if there is Someone who is looking out for you in such a way as to spill some of his own blood on your behalf – why not try saying ‘thanks’.  Being thankful is a trait that can smooth out a lot of questions in any relationship.  And thanks can be done straight from your heart, anytime and any day.  Perhaps then all the puzzling pieces may start coming together to make sense of your life.  Be bold, take a new direction, and say ‘thanks’ to Capricorn.

Aquarius in the Ancient Zodiac

Aquarius is the sixth constellation of the zodiac and is part the Zodiac Unit revealing the results for us of the Coming One’s victory.  It forms the image of a man pouring rivers of water from a celestial jar. Aquarius is Latin for water bearer. In today’s horoscope if you are born between January 21 and February 19 you are an Aquarius.  So in this modern astrology horoscope reading of the ancient zodiac, you follow the horoscope advice for Aquarius to find love, good luck, health, and gain insight on your personality.

Aquarius shows that our thirst for happiness in wealth, luck and love is insufficient. But only the Man in Aquarius can provide the water that will satisfy our thirst. In the ancient zodiac Aquarius offers his water to all people.  So even if you are not Aquarius in the modern horoscope sense, the ancient astrological story in the stars of Aquarius is worth knowing so you can choose whether to drink from His water yourself.

The Ancient Zodiac Story

We saw, with Virgo, that the Bible states that God made the constellations. He gave them as signs of a Story guiding mankind until written revelation. Thus Adam and his sons taught them to their children to instruct them of God’s Plan. Virgo foretold the coming Son of the Virgin – Jesus Christ. We worked our way through the Story explaining the Great Conflict and now we are in the second unit revealing the benefits to us of His victory.

The Original Meaning of Aquarius

Aquarius told the ancients two great truths which is wisdom for us today.

  1. We are thirsty people (symbolized by the Southern Fish drinking in the water).
  2. The water from The Man is the only water that will ultimately quench our thirst.

The ancient prophets also taught these two truths.

We are Thirsty

The ancient prophets wrote about our thirst in various ways. The Psalms expresses it like this:

As the deer pants for streams of water,

    so my soul pants for you, my God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

    When can I go and meet with God?

Psalm 42:1-2

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

But problems arise when we seek to satisfy this thirst with other ‘water’. Jeremiah taught this was the root of our sin.

My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Jeremiah 2:13

The cisterns of water that we pursue are many: money, sex, pleasure, work, family, marriage, status. But these cannot satisfy and we end up still ‘thirsty’ for more. This is what Solomon, the great King known for his wisdom, wrote about. But what can we do to quench our thirst?

Lasting Water to Quench our Thirst

The ancients prophets also foresaw a time when our thirst would be quenched. As far back as Moses they looked forward to the day when:

“Water will flow from his buckets, And his seed will be by many waters, And his king shall be higher than Agag, And his kingdom shall be exalted. Numbers 24:7

The Prophet Isaiah followed with these prophecies.

Behold, a king will reign righteously And princes will rule justly. Each will be like a refuge from the wind And a shelter from the storm, Like streams of water in a dry country, Like the shade of a huge rock in a parched land. Isaiah 32:1-2

‘The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the Lord will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. Isaiah 41:17

Quenching the Thirst

But how would the thirst be quenched? Isaiah continued.

For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. Isaiah 44:3

In the Gospels, Jesus declared that he was the source of that Water

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. John 7: 37-39

He specifies that ‘water’ is a picture of the Spirit, who came to dwell in people on Pentecost.  This was the partial fulfillment, which will be finalized in the Kingdom of God as it states:

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb Revelation 22:1

Coming to Drink

Who needs water more than fish? So the Zodiac pictures Aquarius pouring his water to the fish Piscis Australis – The Southern Fish. This illustrates the simple truth that the victory and blessings won by the Man – the Seed of the Virgin – will certainly go to all who thirst for it. To receive this we need to:

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David. Isaiah 55:1-3

The fishes of Pisces expands on this picture, giving more detail. The gift of His Water is available to all – you and me included.

Aquarius Horoscope in the Ancient Writings

Horoscope comes from the Greek ‘Horo’ (hour) and thus means the marking of special hours. The Prophetic writings mark the Aquarius ‘horo’.  Jesus marks Aquarius in this manner.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

John 4:13-14, 21-23

We are now in the ‘hour’ of Aquarius.  This hour is not a short specific hour as with Capricorn. Instead it is a long and wide open ‘hour’ that continues to extend from the time of that conversation until today. In this hour of Aquarius, Jesus offers us water that will well up to eternal life in us.

The Greek word used by Jesus two times here is horo, the same as the root in ‘horoscope’.

Your Aquarius Horoscope Reading from the Ancient Zodiac

You and I can apply the Aquarius horoscope reading today in the following way.

Aquarius says ‘know thyself’.  What is it deep inside you that you thirst after?  How does this thirst show itself as the traits that those around you see? Perhaps you are just aware of a vague thirst for ‘something more’, whether that be money, longer life, sex, marriage, romantic relationships, or better food and drink. That thirst could make you incompatible with those that are already close to you, causing frustration in any of your deeper relationships, whether that be co-workers, family members or lovers. Be careful that your thirst does not cause you to lose what you do have. 

Now is a good time to ask yourself what is meant by ‘living water’.  What are its characteristics? Words like ‘eternal life’, ‘spring’, ‘spirit’ and ‘truth’ were used to describe the Aquarius offer. They bring to mind traits like ‘abundance’, ‘satisfaction’, ‘refreshing’.  This can turn around your relationships so that you are a ‘giver’ rather than just a ‘taker’. 

But it all starts with knowing your thirst and being honest about what drives you.  So follow the example of the woman in this conversation and see if you can learn how she took up the offer.  A life worth living comes as you examine your heart.

Pisces in the Ancient Zodiac

Pisces is the seventh constellation of the Zodiac, and in the Zodiac Unit revealing the results for us of the Coming One’s victory.  Pisces forms the image of two fishes bound together by a long band. Original Meaning of Pisces

We saw in Capricorn that the fish tail received life from the dying head of the goat. Aquarius showed water poured out to the Fish – Piscis Austrinus. The fish represented the multitudes who would receive the Living Water. This was foreseen back in the time of Abraham when God promised him

all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.

Genesis 12:3

and through your seed all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me Genesis 22:18

These multitudes redeemed through the Coming Servant divided into two groups

he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6

Isaiah wrote of the ‘tribes of Jacob’ as well as the ‘Gentiles’. These are the two fishes of Pisces. When Jesus called his disciples he told them

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Matthew 4:19

The two fishes of Pisces, the tribes of Jacob and those of other nations following Jesus have equal life given to them by him. The Band also holds them equally in bondage.

The Band – Passing Bondage

The two fishes of Pisces, though given new spiritual life, are bound together by the constellation The Band. The Band holds the two fishes captive. But we see the hoof of Aries the Ram coming towards the band. It speaks of the day when the fishes will be freed by Aries.

This is the experience of all followers of Jesus today. The Bible describes our present bondage to suffering, decay and death – but with hope looking forward to the Day of freedom from this bondage (represented in Pisces by the band).

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Romans 8:18-25

For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15: 50-57

The Band around the fishes of Pisces pictures our present-day situation. But we wait expectantly for the coming of Aries to set us free. This freedom from bondage to death is offered to all. In the original zodiac, Pisces did not guide your daily decisions to good fortune, love and better health, based on your birth date. Its Sign declared that not only would the victory of Jesus grant us Living Water, but also that one day he would release us from the bondage to decay, trouble and death that hold us captive now.

Pisces Horoscope in the Sacred Writings

Since Horoscope comes from the Greek ‘Horo’ (hour) and the Prophetic writings mark important hours for us, we note their Pisces ‘hour’. Fishes alive in the water, but still bound by the bands mark the Pisces horo reading.  True life but waiting for complete freedom.

They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the hour (horo) is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their hour (horo) comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, John 16:2-4

We live in the hour of Aquarius and also in the hour of Pisces.  Aquarius brought the water (Spirit of God) to bring life to the fishes.  But we are only in the middle of the Zodiac Story and the final Sagittarius victory is still in the future.  We now face trouble, hardship, persecution and physical death in this hour, as Jesus warned us.  The bands holding the fish are real.  But even as we are held by the bands we still have life.  The Holy Spirit indwells, teaches and guides us – even in the face of death.  Welcome to the hour of Pisces.

Original Meaning of Aries

With Capricorn the Goat-front had died so Fishes could live. But the Band of Pisces still held the fishes. There remains a bondage to physical decay and death. We live through many troubles, grow old and die! But we have a great hope for a physical resurrection. Aries front leg extending to the band of Pisces reveals how this will happen. An amazing thing happened to that Goat (Capricorn) which died. The Bible describes it like this:

Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.” 11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” 13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” 14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Aries – The Lamb Alive!

The marvelous news, planned from the beginning of human history, is that the Lamb, though slain, has come alive again.  Who was the lamb slain?  John the Baptist, thinking back to the sacrifice of Abraham, said of Jesus

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:29

Jesus rose from the dead three days after his crucifixion.  Forty days later, after being with his disciples, the Bible says he ascended into heaven.  So the Lamb is alive and in heaven – just as Aries reveals.

Later in this same vision John saw:

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” Revelation 7:9-10

These are the multitudes, symbolized with the fishes of Pisces, that have come to the Lamb.  But now the bands of decay and death have been broken.  Aries has broken the bands holding the fishes of Pisces.  They have received the fullness of salvation and eternal life.

Aries Horoscope in the Writings

‘Horoscope’ is based on the Greek word ‘Horo’ (hour) and the Bible marks many important hours. We have been reading the crucial Virgo to Pisces ‘hours’ in the writings. But it is the other Greek word in Horoscope – skopus (σκοπός) – which brings out the Aries reading.  Skopus means to look atthink about or consider.  Aries pictures the eternal Lamb of God thus giving no definitive time period to focus on. Rather we are urged to consider the Ram himself.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking (Skopus) to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:3-11

There is no hour de-limiting Aries the Ram.  But the Ram has gone through distinct degrees of glory.  We first see him in the very nature (or form) of God.  He planned even from the beginning to be a servant by becoming a human and to die.  Virgo announced this descent to ‘human likeness’ and Capricorn expressed his obedience to death.  But death was not the end – it could not hold him and now the Ram is exalted in heaven, alive and in charge.  It is from this high authority and power that the Ram executes the final unit of the Zodiac, beginning with Taurus.  No longer the servant, He is preparing to come in Judgment to vanquish his enemy, as Sagittarius of the ancient Zodiac story predicts.

Your Aries Horoscope Reading

You and I can apply the Aries horoscope reading in this way:

Aries declares that the brightness of morning comes after the dark night. Life has a way of bringing the dark night to you. You might be tempted to give up, quit or settle for something less than what you were made for. To find the resilience to keep on going you need to look past your circumstances and situation. You need to see your ultimate destiny.

You do so by scoping out Aries. If you belong to Aries you will ride on his coattails and he is at the highest place and he will take you there with him. For if, while you were God’s enemy, your relationship with him was restored through the Capricorn sacrifice, how much more, now being compatible with Him, will you be saved through Aries’ life? It is just that you have to follow his path, and his path went down before it went up – so yours will have to as well.

How to keep going? Rejoice in Aries’ life always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident in all your relationships. Aries is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, bring your requests to God. And the peace of God, which goes beyond your understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in The Ram. Finally, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

The Return of the Lamb

This closes the second unit of the ancient zodiac story which focused on the benefits given to those who receive the fruits of the victory of Jesus (The Lamb).  Why not receive his gift of life?

The final unit, chapters 9-12 of the Zodiac Story, focus on what happens when Aries the Ram returns – as he promised.  This is declared in that same vision of the Lamb when John saw:

They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! Revelation 6:16

Taurus in the Ancient Zodiac

Taurus is an image of a fierce, charging bull with powerful horns. In the ancient Zodiac, Taurus was the ninth of twelve astrology constellations that together formed a Great Story. Virgo to Sagittarius formed an astrological unit about the Great Redeemer and his mortal conflict with His Enemy. Capricorn to Aries formed another unit which focused on the work of this Redeemer for us. Then Taurus opens the third and final astrological unit focusing on the Return of the Redeemer and his complete Victory.  This unit opens with a Bull and closes with a Lion (Leo) so it concerns power and authority.

In the ancient Zodiac, Taurus was for all people since it predicts events affecting everyone.  So, even if you are not a Taurus in the modern horoscope sense, the ancient astrology story embedded in the stars of Taurus is worth understanding.

Observe the Taurus stars connected with lines. Can you make out the bull with horns any better? Rather it looks more like a cosmic letter K.

As with the previous zodiac constellations, the Taurus image of the Bull is not obvious from the constellation itself.  It is not innate from the stars. Rather, the idea of the Charging Bull came first. The first astrologers then overlaid this idea onto the stars. But why?  What did it mean to the ancients?

The astrological image of Taurus shows the Bull with prominent horns, head lowered, charging. It is as if the Bull is shown in intense rage – ready to gore anyone in its path, dashing forward with swift and boundless energy.

Circled in red is the star group known as the Pleiades (or Seven Sisters) in the middle of the neck of Taurus. The earliest direct reference to the Pleiades comes from the Book of Job in the Bible. Job lived around the time of Abraham, about 4000 years ago. There we read:

He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

The constellations, including the Pleiades (and so also Taurus) were made by the Creator himself. Originally the zodiac was His story given to the ancients before revelation was written down. Central to this Story was the coming (Virgo – from the Virgin) of Jesus. Taurus continues the story, but expands the scope. The horns of Taurus and the Psalms are the keys to understand. The Christ had to come from the line of David (The title ‘Anointed one’ = ‘Christ’). Among the images describing the coming Christ was that of ‘horn’.

“Here I will make a horn grow for David and set up a lamp for my anointed one. Psalm 132:17

You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured on me.

Psalm 92:10

The ‘horn’ represented power and authority. The Anointed One (Christ) was the horn of David. In his First Coming he did not wield his horn because he came as a Servant. But consider what his Second Coming will be like.

Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it! The Lord is angry with all nations; his wrath is on all their armies. He will totally destroy them, he will give them over to slaughter. Their slain will be thrown out, their dead bodies will stink; the mountains will be soaked with their blood. All the stars in the sky will be dissolved and the heavens rolled up like a scroll; all the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shriveled figs from the fig tree. My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; see, it descends in judgment on Edom, the people I have totally destroyed. The sword of the Lord is bathed in blood, it is covered with fat— the blood of lambs and goats, fat from the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. And the wild oxen will fall with them, the bull calves and the great bulls. Their land will be drenched with blood, and the dust will be soaked with fat. For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution, to uphold Zion’s cause. Isaiah 34:1-8

The dissolving of the stars is exactly what Jesus said would be the Sign of his return. The prophet Isaiah (700 BCE) here is predicting the same event. So it describes the hour of the Christ’s coming to judge the world in righteousness – the hour of a coming Judgment. It is pictured in the heavens with Taurus, and it is written in the Book. He is coming as Judge.

Taurus Horoscope in the Writings

The Prophetic writings mark the Taurus ‘horo’ like this.

Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour (horo) of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.” Revelation 14: 6-7

The Greek word for the hour of judgment is horo, the same as the root in ‘horoscope’.  The prophetic reading says that this hour will come and it is the hour that marks Taurus in the ancient astrological horoscope.

Your Taurus Horoscope Reading

You and I can apply the Taurus horoscope reading today.

Taurus tells you that the end will come with such a big bang that all the lights in the sky will go out.  There won’t even be any planets around to align with any star. So best to make good use of your time while the lights are still on. A good place to start is working on your humility trait because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. In other words, there is no compatibility between Him and pride in you. And by the sounds of it, you will be looking for much mercy in that Hour (horo). A characteristic He will test for in that Hour (horo) is whether you love him or not. How do you know if you love him? According to him, if you guard his commands then you love him. At the very least, guarding his commands means knowing them and doing them.

Loving one another is another trait that He values highly. Of course His idea of what love is may be different than yours so you will want to know what He says true love is. His idea of love will carry you far in any relationship, whether at work, at home or in romance. He talked less about how love makes you feel, and more about what love makes you do and not do. He said that love is patient and kind and does not envy, does not boast, and is not proud. Practicing to put these characteristics into your life will go along way to prepare you for the Taurus hour (horo). As a final thought, it may open things up to learn what ‘the eternal gospel’ is which the angel was to proclaim to all nations.

Castor & Pollux long ago

The Gospel references Gemini when Paul and his companions were travelling to Rome by ship and they noted

After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island—it was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux.

Acts 28:11

Castor and Pollux are the traditional names of the two twins in Gemini.  This shows the idea of divine twins was common around 2000 years ago.

As with the previous zodiac constellations, the image of two twins is not obvious from the constellation itself. It is not innate within the star constellation. Rather, the idea of Twins came first. The first astrologers then overlaid this idea onto the stars. But what did it originally mean?

Why have astrologers since ancient times always associated Gemini with a pair – usually, but not always, male twins?

Gemini in the Ancient Story

We saw in Virgo that the Bible state that God made the constellations. He gave them as signs of a Story to guide mankind before written revelation. Thus Adam and his sons taught them to their children to instruct them of God’s Plan. Virgo foretold the coming Seed of the Virgin –Jesus Christ.

Gemini continues this story.  Even if you are not a Gemini in the modern horoscope sense, the ancient astrological story in the Gemini stars is worth knowing.

Original Meaning of Gemini

We can understand its original meaning in the names of the Gemini stars, which Greek and Roman pagan myths now associated with Gemini have distorted.

Medieval Arabic astrologers passed on names of these constellation stars received from ancient times. The star ‘Castor’ has the arabic name Al-Ras al-Taum al-Muqadim or “The Head of the Foremost Twin”. Prominent in Castor is the star Tejat Posterior, meaning “the back foot”, referring to Castor’s foot. It is also sometimes known as Calx which means “the heel.” Another prominent star has the traditional name, Mebsuta, coming from the ancient Arabic Mabsūṭah, meaning “the outstretched paw”. Mabsūṭah represented lions’ paws in Arabic culture.

Pollux is known as “The Head of the Second Twin,” from the Arabic Al-Ras al-Tau’am al-Mu’akhar. The meaning is not so much of two born at the same time, but rather of two becoming completed or joined.  The Torah uses the same word where it says of two boards in Ark of the Covenant:

At these two corners they must be double from the bottom all the way to the top and fitted into a single ring; both shall be like that. Exodus 26:24

As the box of the ark doubles the two boards, so Gemini brings the two together, not by time of birth, but by a bonding. Since Castor is identified with ‘heel’ (Scorpio) and ‘paw of lion’ (Leo) which are prophecies of Jesus Christ, then Castor is the astrological picture of Jesus Christ at his return.

But who is the one joined to him?

The writings give two images which explain the two pictures of Gemini as

  1. United brothers
  2. A man-woman pair.

Gemini – Firstborn & Adopted Brothers

The Gospel explains of Jesus Christ  that

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. Colossians 1:15

‘Firstborn’ implies that others will come later. This is confirmed.

For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Romans 8:29

This picture goes back to creation. When God created Adam & Eve He created them

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

God created Adam and Eve in His essential spiritual likeness. Thus Adam is called

… Adam, the son of God Luke 3:38

When Adam & Eve disobeyed God they marred this likeness, annulling our sonship. But when Jesus Christ came as the ‘firstborn son’ he restored the image.  So now through Jesus Christ…

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:12-13

The gift offered to us is ‘to become children of God’. We were not born children of God, but through Jesus Christ we become His children through adoption.

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4

This was the Libra horoscope reading. Through Jesus Christ God adopts us as His children. He does this through the gift of Jesus Christ, the firstborn.

Upon his return Jesus Christ will reign as King. The Bible closes with this vision of the role of the adopted younger brother.

There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:5

This is almost the last sentence in the Bible, as it looks to the fulfillment of all things. There it sees the adopted brothers reigning with the Firstborn. The ancients pictured this long ago in Gemini as the Foremost and the Second brothers ruling in heaven.

Gemini – The man & woman united

The Bible also displays the wedding union of a man and woman to picture the relationship between Christ and those who belong to him. The details of Eve’s creation & marriage to Adam on Friday of Creation week were purposefully designed to foreshadow this union with the Messiah. It was also pictured in the love story of Ruth & Boaz. The Gospel concludes with this wedding picture between the Lamb (Aries) and his bride.

Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Revelation 19:7

The closing chapter gives the following invitation as it looks to the cosmic union of the Lamb and his bride.

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life. Revelation 22: 17

Aquarius will marry and he is inviting us to be that Bride. Gemini pictured this long ago – the cosmic union of the Lamb and His Bride.

Gemini Horoscope in the Writings

Horoscope comes from the Greek ‘Horo’ (hour) and means the marking (skopus) of sacred hours.  Jesus marked The Gemini hour (horo) in his story of the Wedding Banquet.

“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour (horo). At the hour (horo) of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ Luke 14:7

The Two Horos of Gemini

The Gemini horoscope has two hours. Jesus taught there is a definite but unknown hour when the Wedding occurs and many will miss it.  This is the point of the parable of the ten virgins.  Some were not ready for the appointed hour and so missed it. But the hour remains open and the Groom continues sending invitations to all to come to the wedding banquet.  This is the hour we live in now.  We simply need to come because He has done all the work to prepare the banquet.

Here is the zodiac in the Dendera Temple of Egypt, more than 2000 years old, with the image of cancer circled in red.

Though the sketch labels the image ‘crab’ it actually looks like a beetle. The Egyptian records of about 4000 years ago describes Cancer as a Scarabaeus (Scarab) beetle, the sacred symbol of immortality.

In ancient Egypt the scarab symbolized rebirth or regeneration. The Egyptians often depicted their god Khepri, the rising sun, as a scarab beetle or as a scarab beetle-headed man.

Original meaning of Cancer

The ancient Egyptians are much closer in time to when the Zodiac was first drawn up, so the scarab beetle, rather than the crab of the modern astrological horoscope, is key to understand the ancient zodiac meaning of Cancer. Egyptologist Sir Wallace Budge says this about Khepera and the scarab beetle of the Ancient Egyptians.

KHEPERA was an old primeval god, and the type of matter which contains within itself the germ of life which is about to spring into a new existence; thus he represented the dead body from which the spiritual body was about to rise. He is depicted in the form of a man having a beetle for a head and this insect became his emblem because it was supposed to be self-begotten and self-produced.

Scarab Beetle: Ancient symbol of Resurrection

The scarab beetle goes through several life stages before it finally transforms into the adult beetle. After hatching from eggs, the scarabs become worm-like larvae called grubs. As grubs they spend their existence living in the ground, feeding on decomposing matter such as dung, fungi, roots or rotten meat.

After crawling as a grub, it then cocoons itself into a chrysalis. In this state all activity ceases. It no longer intakes food. It closes all senses. All functions of life shut down and the scarab hibernates inside the cocoon. Here the grub undergoes metamorphosis, with its body dissolving and then re-assembling. At the appointed time the adult scarab emerges from the cocoon. Its adult beetle form does not resemble the worm-like body that could only crawl in the ground. Now the beetle bursts forth, flies and soars at will in the air and sunshine.

The ancient Egyptians venerated the scarab beetle because it symbolized the promised resurrection.

Cancer … like the Scarab Beetle

Cancer declares that our lives follow a similar pattern. Now we live on the earth, slaves of toil and suffering, full of darkness and doubt – mere knots of incapacities and troubles like the earth-born and dirt-fed grubs, though bearing in us the seed and possibility of eventual glory.

Then our earthly life terminates in death and passes into the mummy-like condition in which our inner person sleeps in death, with our body waiting for the resurrection call to burst out of the graves. This was the ancient meaning and symbol of Cancer – the resurrection of the body triggered when the Redeemer Calls.

Cancer: Resurrected Life

As the scarab bursts from its hibernation so will the dead awake.

Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

Daniel 12:2-3

This will happen when the Christ calls for us to follow in the path of his resurrection.

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.

Cancer: Depicting the novel essence of the Resurrection Body

As the adult scarab is of a different essence, with features and capabilities unimaginable by extrapolating from the worm-like grub from which it arose, so our resurrection body will be of a different essence than our bodies today.

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Original meaning of Leo

In the Old Testament, Jacob gave this prophecy of the tribe of Judah

You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? 10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his. Genesis 49:9-10

Jacob declared that a ruler will come, a ‘he’ pictured as a lion. His rule would include ‘the nations’ and he would come from the tribe of Judah of Israel. Jesus came from the tribe of Judah and was anointed the Christ. But in that coming he did not pick up the ruler’s scepter. He is saving that for his next coming when he will come like a Lion to rule. This is what Leo pictured from the earliest times.

The Victorious Lion

Looking to this coming, the writings describe the Lion as the only one worthy to open the sacred scroll.

Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

The Lion triumphed over his enemy at his first coming and so now is able to open seals that usher in the End. We see this in the ancient Zodiac by noting Leo over his enemy Hydra the Serpent.

The Conclusion of the Zodiac Story

The intent of the Lion’s struggle with the Serpent was not simply to defeat him, but to rule. The writings picture the rule of the Lion with these words.

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. Revelation 21:1-7

In this vision we see the fulfillment and completion of the Zodiac. We see the bride and her husband; God and his children – the double-sided picture image in Gemini. We see the river of water – promised in Aquarius. The old order of death – pictured by the bands around Pisces – is no more. The Lamb dwells there – pictured in Aries, and the resurrected people – pictured with Cancer – live with Him. The scales of Libra now balance since ‘nothing impure will ever enter’. We see the Kings of all the nations there as well, ruling under the authority of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Messiah – beginning as the seed of Virgo, and at the End revealed as the Lion.

The Hostages of the Zodiac Story

A question remains. Why did the Lion not simply destroy Satan the serpent at the very beginning? Why go through all the Zodiac chapters? When Jesus faced his adversary Scorpio he marked that hour with:

Now is the hour (horo) for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

John 12:31

The prince of this world, Satan, was using us as human shields. When confronted with a powerful military force terrorists will often take cover behind civilians. This creates a dilemma for the police in that they might kill the civilians while they take out the terrorists. When Satan succeeded in tempting Adam and Eve he created a human shield for himself. Satan knew that The Creator is absolutely just and if he punished sin then, to be righteous in his judgment, he must judge all sin. If God destroyed Satan, then Satan (which means The Accuser) could simply accuse us of our own wrongdoing, requiring our judgment along with him.

To look at it in another way, our disobedience brought us into Satan’s legal control. If God destroyed him then He would have to destroy us also because we also were caught up in Satan’s disobedience.

The Need for Rescue before Judgment

So we needed rescuing from Satan’s demand that any judgment on him must also come upon us. We needed ransoming from our sin. The Gospel explains it like this:

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

Ephesians 2:1-3

OUR Ransom NOW PAID

In his sacrifice pictured in Capricorn Jesus took that wrath upon himself. He paid the ransom so we could go free.

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesian 2: 4-9

God never intended the Judgment of Hell for people. He prepared it for Satan. But if he judges the devil for his rebellion then He must do the same for those not ransomed.

Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Matthew 25:41

Our Way of Escape now Made

This is why Jesus achieved a great victory at the cross. He freed us from the legal right that Satan had over us. He can now strike Satan without having to also strike us. But we must choose to take this escape from Satan’s dominion. Leo is currently holding back from striking the serpent so that people can escape from that Judgment.

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9

This is why we find ourselves today still waiting for the final strike against Satan, pictured in Sagittarius, and still waiting for the final Judgment, pictured in Taurus. But the writings warn us.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 2 Peter 3: 10

This declares that we are like people sleeping in a building that is burning up. We need to wake up! This is the hour (horo) to wake up because Leo is coming. The roaring Lion will strike and destroy Satan and all still in his legal dominion.

Why did a Good God create a Bad Devil?

The Bible says that it was the devil (or Satan) in the form of a serpent who temped Adam and Eve to sin and brought about their fall.  But this raises an important question:  Why did God create a ‘bad’ devil (which means ‘adversary’) to corrupt His good creation?

Lucifer – The Shining One

In fact, the Bible says that God created a powerful, intelligent, and beautiful spirit  who was chief among all angels. His name was Lucifer (meaning ‘Shining One’) – and he was very good.  But Lucifer also had a will with which he could freely choose.  A passage in Isaiah 14 records the choice he made:

How you have fallen from heaven,
morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!
You said in your heart,
I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of the North.
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.”

Isaiah 14:12-14

Lucifer, like Adam, faced a decision.  He could accept that God was God or he could choose to be his own ‘god’.  His repeated “I wills” show that he chose to defy God and declare himself to be ‘Most High’. 

A passage in Ezekiel gives a parallel description of the fall of Lucifer:

You were in Eden, the garden of God.
…  I ordained and anointed you
as the mighty angelic guardian.
You had access to the holy mountain of God
and walked among the stones of fire.
“You were blameless in all you did
from the day you were created
until the day evil was found in you.
… and you sinned.
So I banished you in disgrace
from the mountain of God.
I expelled you, O mighty guardian,
from your place among the stones of fire.
Your heart was filled with pride
because of all your beauty.
Your wisdom was corrupted
by your love of splendor.
So I threw you to the ground.

Ezekiel 28:13-17

Lucifer’s beauty, wisdom and power – all the good things created in him by God – led to pride.  His pride led to his rebellion, but he never lost any of his power and abilities.  He is now leading a cosmic revolt against his Creator to see who will be God.  His strategy was to enlist mankind to join him. He did so by tempting them to the same choice that he made: become autonomous from God and defy Him.  The heart of Adam’s temptation was the same as Lucifer’s. It was just presented differently.  They both chose to be ‘god’ to themselves.

Satan – working through others

The passage in Isaiah speaks to the ‘King of Babylon’ and the Ezekiel passage speaks to the ‘King of Tyre’.  But from the descriptions given it is clear they do not speak to humans.  The “I wills” in Isaiah describe someone thrown to the earth in punishment for wanting to place his throne above that of God.  The passage in Ezekiel addresses an ‘angelic guardian’ who once moved in Eden and the ‘mountain of God’.  Satan (or Lucifer) often puts himself behind or through someone else.  In Genesis he speaks through the serpent.  In Isaiah he rules through the King of Babylon, and in Ezekiel he possesses the King of Tyre.

Why did Lucifer revolt against God?

But why did Lucifer want to challenge the all-powerful and all-knowing Creator?  Part of being ‘smart’ is to know whether or not you can defeat your opponent.  Lucifer may have power, but that would still be insufficient to defeat His Creator.  Why lose everything for something he could not win?  I would think that a ‘smart’ angel would have recognized his limitations against God – and hold back his revolt.  So why didn’t he? 

But consider that Lucifer could only believe that God was His all-powerful Creator by faith – the same as for us.  The Bible suggests that God created angels during creation week.  For example, a passage in Job tells us:

Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:…

Job 38:1

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.

Job 38:4

…while the morning stars sang together
    and all the angels shouted for joy?

Job 38:7

Imagine that Lucifer was created, becoming sentient during creation week, somewhere in the universe. All he knows is that now he exists and is self-aware. Also another Being claims that He has created Lucifer and the universe. But how does Lucifer know that this claim is true?  Perhaps, this so-called creator had popped into existence in the stars just before Lucifer popped into existence. Since this ‘creator’ arrived earlier on the scene, he was (perhaps) more powerful and (perhaps) more knowledgeable than Lucifer. But then again maybe not.  Perhaps both he and the ‘creator’ just popped into existence simultaneously.  Lucifer could only accept God’s Word to him that He had created him, and that God himself was eternal and infinite. But in his pride he chose to believe his fantasy instead.

Maybe you doubt that Lucifer could believe that both he and God (and the other angels) just ‘popped’ into existence.  But this is the same basic idea behind the latest thinking in modern cosmology.  There was a quantum fluctuation of nothing, and then out of this fluctuation the universe popped into existence. That is the essence of modern cosmology theories.  Fundamentally, everyone – from Lucifer to Richard Dawkins & Stephen Hawkings to you & me – must decide by faith whether the universe is self-contained or was created and sustained by a Creator God.

In other words, seeing is not believing.  Lucifer had seen and talked with God. But he still had to accept ‘by faith’ that God had created him.  Many people say that if God would just ‘appear’ to them, then they would believe.  However, in the Bible many people saw and heard God – but still did not take Him at His word.  ‘Seeing’ alone never resulted in trust. The issue was whether they would accept and trust His Word about Himself and themselves.  The fall of Lucifer is consistent with this.

What is the Devil doing today?

So, according to the Bible, God did not create a ‘bad devil’, but a beautiful, powerful and intelligent angelic being.   In pride he led a revolt against God – and in doing so was corrupted. Yet he retains his original splendor.  You, I and all of mankind have become part of the battleground in this contest between God and his ‘adversary’ (devil).  The devil’s strategy is not about wearing sinister black cloaks like ‘Black Riders’ in the Lord of the Rings. Nor does he put evil curses on us.  Instead he seeks to deceive us from the redemption that God has accomplished in the death and resurrection of Jesus.  As the Bible says:

Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15

Because Satan and his servants can masquerade as ‘light’ we are more easily tricked.  Perhaps this is why the Gospel always seems to run against our instincts and against all cultures.
